NYE Fashion Dos & Donts

As the New Year approaches, fashion becomes more festive than ever. You start to see major differences in what your favorite retailer or boutique offers. Instead of the normal fall colors and accessories, there are pieces with splashes of sequins, lively holiday colors, and shiny shirts, bottoms and jewelry. With so many options, you must know the dos and don’ts of this glitzy time of year. So, allow me to help you out a bit.

When picking through outfits in December and January, you’re usually going to be bombarded with a whole bunch of glitter, shimmer and sequin. I’m sure this has been the case these past two months. Don’t be alarmed –– it’s normal for the fashion scene. It’s a season of celebration, so of course you want the sparkly works! However, you must try your hardest to say NO to the tacky costume look, like a sequin knit tank for instance. What’s the point of bedazzling a tank top when you can rock a stunning embellished dress? There is nothing to fear about being laced in shimmer. It’s the perfect way to deck your self up in something lavish and sexy.

My pick would be something similar to the midnight blue long-sleeved dress with cutout shoulder detail and all over sequin embellishment by Dress Up found at Topshop. It’s sleek and sexy; both things you want to take up in the spirit of NYE. Silvers, golds and blacks are going to be the most common colors you see, but don’t be afraid to mix it up a bit with some other colors. The bonus here is that you can revamp that particular look for other occasions outside of NYE.

Velvet is also a popular choice for NYE. It is classic and feels so good on the skin. The burgundy, velvet fit tunic dress with a scooped neckline, also found at Topshop, is another favorite. I must admit that I have mixed feelings about wearing lace this season because mesh just seems to be way more appealing. If done right, mesh can give your look the right mix, revealing a little skin while offering a refreshing look.

So, get out there and dig for the glittery shimmering treasures but stay away from sequin tanks and booty shorts!
