We all have our secrets but none as great as Paige Donahue’s in Kimberla Lawson Roby’s newest novel, Secret Obsession.

We all have our secrets but none as great as Paige Donahue’s in Kimberla Lawson Roby’s newest novel, Secret Obsession.

The main character Paige has always felt that she’s lived in the shadows of her older sister, Camille, throughout her life. She’s the one who’s gotten the hand-me-downs, who has always had to struggle, and who felt she was treated unjustly by her parents––while Camille was constantly put up on a pedestal and given the best of everything. So, in order to get back at her unsuspecting sis, Paige plans the ultimate scheme to steal away her brother-in-law, Camille’s husband, Pierce—a man who treats Camille like a queen and lavished her with a beautiful home, luxury cars and two wonderful children.

Paige feels as though once she takes Pierce away from her sister, she’ll be able to live the life she’s always deserved—and no one will be the wiser.

The extremes that Paige goes through to carry out her plan are a bit unrealistic—although they make for great reading. It’s a tale of jealousy that makes you wonder if there really are people out there who think as she does. As the book ends, it becomes a little cliché, but the topics that are touched upon near its conclusion are some that are rarely talked about in the African American community, which is a nice touch and somewhat unexpected.

Overall, Secret Obsession is a definite page-turner and will keep you looking ahead to see the next crazy scheme Paige will come up with to reach her ultimate goal.
