Down Home Chicago Eating

There is nothing like filling your belly with a delectable meal that seems to sooth the soul and satisfy the palate. Located in the historic Bronzeville area, Chicago’s Home of Chicken and Waffles promises to tantalize the taste buds with food reminiscent of grandma’s cooking.

The ambience is just as comfortable as the food. Portraits of familiar black faces dress the walls along with eye popping Africa American art as well as jazz music playing from the sound system. It’s a modest spot that provides both table and booth seating. What it lacks in capacity it more than makes up for in food options. There is plenty to choose from.

There’s the traditional chicken and waffles to the stomp down perfectly seasoned catfish, buttered macaroni and cheese, sweet yams, red beans and rice, grits, pancakes, collard greens and more. They have basic entrees called “The Saint”, “Carl the Banker”, and “Jackie O”. They have their signature and homemade Chicago Dream which is a mixture of fruit punch, orange juice, and whip cream and quite popular with patrons.

It was originally called Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles like the more famous establishment in California. There was a bit of red tape where that was concerned, so they changed the name and kept the business rolling. Although this quaint restaurant was shrouded in a bit of controversy because of this, they pressed forward to make sure that a whole lot of love went into every dish.

They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner no matter the time of day. They are reasonably priced with dishes ranging from about $8 to $15. They do not take reservations so it would be wise to get there as early as possible especially on the weekends because the wait time for a table will be long and so will the line. You will encounter street parking with no hassle, friendly as well as timely service and down home cooking all in the confines of a very trendy yet urban establishment.

Support a black owned local business all while making your tummy happy too. Check out Chicago’s Home of Chicken and Waffles located at 3947 S. King Drive at Oakwood Boulevard and get your grub on.
