Kierra Sheard Is Living a Bold Right Life

Coming from one of the most prolific, recognizable and legendary gospel families, Kierra Sheard is becoming a trailblazer in her own right. Not only is she the new generation Sheard tearing up the music charts, but she’s taking her musical ministry and using it to uplift the lives of today’s youth. “The enemy is really after today’s generation,” Sheard said.

Sheard picked up a 2010 Stellar Gospel award with gospel aficionado J. Moss, her mom Karen Clark-Sheard and kher aunt’s Dorinda Clark Cole, Jacky Clark Chisholm and Twinkie Clark. The 22-year-old Grammy nominated vocalist has definitely helped shape the landscape of contemporary gospel music. She has garnered major success with albums I Owe You (2004), This is Me (2006) and Bold Right Life (2008). The Bold Right Life album charted #3 for the Top Gospel albums in 2008 and #9 for Top Christian Album in the United States.

Bold Right Life is not only the title of Sheard’s third studio album, but her organization that serves to challenge young people to live through God. Sheard is trying to encourage people to not be afraid to live through God’s word. She wants to bridge the gap between the new generation and traditions of the church. “Sometimes it’s hard to receive the word of God from older people,” Sheard said. She is taking a new approach in getting today’s generation ready for life.

Covenant of Faith Church’s modest sanctuary was filled to capacity with family, friends, church members, musisicians, up-and-coming artists and radio personalities like Keno Greer of 92.3 to help Sheard kick off the Bold Right Life (BRL) organization. The mission of the Bold Right Life foundation is “to tackle the spirit of ignorance forced upon today’s youth, by nurturing them spiritually and naturally.” ks

“We are dead to the things of this world,” Sheard said. Keno Greer, the host of the BRL event and radio host for Chicago’s 92.3 Sunday Morning ‘Street Sermonz’ show, said that it was an honor to host the event because you can actually see Sheard ministering to young people. “Young people sometimes get overlooked at church,” Greer said.

She took the stage with the BRL Chicago and Detroit Youth choirs. Sheard is not just sitting on the sidelines as a dictator, but walking the walk with the young people she means to inspire. “We’re young people accepting Christ, and we’re bold about our Christian walk,” she said. “Some of these young people may not necessarily know how to preach or prophesize, but they can still be leaders, and we need leaders.”

Sheard is grounded in her faith. As a young person herself, she understands the difficulties of finding self-purpose and direction. “I’m not perfect and I’m still growing, but I’ve learned to let the Word do the work,” she said. f

Sheard said that God is aware of the visions and goals we have. The Bold Right Life Foundation was Sheard’s vision and it has manifested itself through the lives of the young people she works with. Brandon, one of the members of the BRL Chicago Youth Choir, said his life has changed since joining the choir. “This has been an unbelievable experience,” Brandon said. “Kierra is so genuine and she is really teaching us to walk with Christ.”

Sheard told GlossMagazineOnline the importance of being saved. “We need the power and authority to defeat the enemy. It’s important to be saved and have a relationship with Christ and having him in your life, having his favor in your life, there’re nothing like it,” she said. “He will lead you and guide you, but we must separate ourselves from worldly things.”

The spiritual tools Sheard is tirelessly trying to impart on the youth through Bold Right Life sets her apart from her peers. This gospel starlet has told her testimony and she wants to empower the youth so that they can encourage their peers to do the same. She was despondent about what she calls the ‘perversion of man’ on the youth and the lack of knowledge about Christ. “There is so much temptation and oftentimes the young people do not have the support system or resources to seek a positive alternative,” she said.

Kierra said she doesn’t want to see a generation perish because they did not know the word of God. It disturbed her spirit enough to use her gifts and fame to help young people know God. Sheard believes God gave her a vision and a special ministry to encourage the youth. Bold Right Life is blossoming into a ministry that’s foundation is rooted in God’s power, according to Sheard. It is a life-changing experience.

Right now Bold Right Life is involved in various outreach programs; BRL puts on a conference every year in Detroit in August to inspire the youth through Christ and the ministry of music. “It is really about taking the Word of God and teaching it to our young people,” Sheard said. “Once they are armed with the knowledge their potential, dreams and talents can become realized.”
