Created by Nik herself, SHE-THING started in July 2010. Nik says that she was inspired by designer Kimora Lee Simmons.
“She’s an entrepreneur and a go-getter,” Nik says.
The handmade and hand-selected jewelry comes in necklaces, bracelets and earrings.
“The collection is semi-exclusive pieces and come in limited quantity of pieces,” Nik says.
Before she created her collection, Nik was working in sales and marketing and accounting. She considers herself a creative-minded individual, so she created something that inspired her.
What sets SHE THING apart from other jewelry collections is the catchiness of the name, she explains.
“Everybody has their name or their design in the title of the company. My collection has sassiness and boldness to it,” she says.
The meaning behind the name comes from the lyrics from rap duo, Salt-N-Pepa’s song, “Ain’t Nuthin’ But a She Thing.” She said she came up with one of the ideas for her two collections by watching an episode of a show that had an alter-ego photo shoot.
“Every woman has things she wishes she could do, wear and say, and ‘Alter ego’ allows you to turn into the ‘she thing,’” she says.
SHE THING’s target audience is women ages 35-45, women who are established and women who are fashionable.
The collection was recently nominated for a Denver Style Award at the Denver Style Expo in 2011. To be nominated, Nik promoted her collection on Twitter, asking her followers to also tweet about it.
“To be nominated and mentioned somewhere out of Colorado is a big honor,” she says. “I think 2011 is a really good year as a company.”
The collection is currently available online and will be in boutiques by the summer.
“I focus on unique pieces that women want to wear on a daily basis,” Nik says.
