This year, the 5th Annual Global Mixx (GMIXX) Music Retreat was held in Chicago, Oct. 2 – 4. With its theme “Back II Basics,” the retreat honored and spotlighted some of the most influential music and marketing professionals in the business.
Founded by Mary Datcher, principal and founder of On the Street Promotions & Marketing, the Global Mixx Music Retreat is an exclusive music and marketing gathering that educates and empowers the urban music community. Attendees include record label executives, marketing agencies, aspiring artists, songwriters, producers, artist managers, entertainment attorneys, etc. Honorary co-chairs of the conference included Illinois State Representative Ken Dunkin, radio personality Khris ‘First Lady’ Rhaye, editor-in-chief of The Source Leroy ‘Bum’ Peoples, DJ Pharris Thomas, producer Maurice Joshua and Ted Chung, president of the Cashmere Agency.
The event kicked off with a VIP reception at club Exposure with a guest appearance from iconic rap duo Naughty by Nature and performances from various up-and-coming acts. The following day was jam-packed with knowledge building seminars featuring some of the best and most well-known industry leaders in the country. Seminars were held at Chicago’s historical Blackstone Renaissance Hotel and the rooms were overflowing with aspiring artists, songwriters and producers interested in sessions that included topics like Branding in the Digital Age (which featured Naughty by Nature’s Treach and Vinnie as panelists); Songwriting, Publishing and Licensing; Radio Chronicles; and more.
Saturday night Vinny and Trench took the audience back to the 90s, performing their hits and paying homage to other “old school” artists, and the new artists like Slim Black and Jak Frost represented the future of hip-hop with performances at Visions Nightclub.
The conference closed on Sunday with the GMIXX Honor’s and Rooftop Brunch, followed by an unsigned artists’ showcase.
