Remembering Your Blessings

My friend on Facebook recently started putting her blessings of the day as her statuses, which obviously got me to thinking about a few things. Some of the blessings were big, while some of others were small. Within a matter of weeks, I started to notice the blessings just kept on coming for her. I couldn’t help but to think: “God has been really good to her.”

Her new “routine” sparked a flame in me. Two weeks ago, I decided to write down the blessing that have happened to me, big and small. Once I finished, I realized God has been really good to me, too! I guess you could say it wasn’t until I took the time to actually count my blessings that I realized just how blessed I truly am. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not “blessed” as in lucky, which some tend to easily get confused. So, although I haven’t found a random $100 bill when I walked out of my front door, God is still looking out for me. For some reason, I’m focusing more on the small things – like spending time with loved ones, and realizing the blessings that come along with that.

American social writer Eric Hoffer said, “The hardest arithmetic to master is that which enables us to count our blessings.” Eric has a great point. When I wrote my blessings, it was really hard. You don’t realize that that smile or laugh that you had with your friends, or the crazy, but good times that you have with your family are all blessings. Sometimes, when we recognize the blessings that have been bestowed upon us, and how many of them occur, it seems like the small things that we allow to get under our skin don’t matter as much anymore. Life is way too short to dwell on the bad things that happen in your life. I feel that everybody should take a close look at all they have been blessed with in life. When you really examine your blessings, you become a little more thankful for everything.
