Melody Thornton: Branching Out on Her Own

When you hear the name Melody Thornton, the first thing you may think is: "That's the girl from Pussycat Dolls (PCD)." However, there's much more to the Phoenix native with southern roots who rose to fame as the youngest member of the group that produced several billboard chart-topping hits. She is a songwriter, dancer and model –– just to name a few –– who has held on to her passion for music since she was a little girl.

"My mother says I was singing before I could talk; using those little keyboards with the microphone attached," said Melody, whose influences include Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, BB King and Paula Abdul.

Meldoy, whose voice stood out on songs like "Don’t Cha" and "Buttons," has moved on from being a PCD

"Moving forward away from what you know is always scary. The group came to an end and we all had to pick up the pieces honestly. I’m excited about life and a project that is all my own. Being creative is what I do best," Melody said.

Her first solo project, "Sweet Vendetta" was released recently. She describes it is a "soulful, but young and playful" song.

"A Sweet Vendetta is when you still have tender feelings for someone but you really can't stand them. [laughs]. And you want to get them back," said Melody, who gets her song writing inspiration from movies with an intense story line.

Even though she is focused on music, Melody has been a part of other projects since the breakup of PCD in early 2010. She was a co-star of E!’s "Bank of Hollywood" (produced by Ryan Seacrest), a correspondent of the 2010 Grammy Awards, and part of UK’s hit show "Pop Star to Opera Star," which created a love for a new type of music.

“[Pop Star to Opera Star] was stressful and useful. My voice has developed beautifully and I have continued training in Los Angeles. I now love classical music,” she said.

Melody is also a rising fashion icon and believes style is all about how you want to be perceived. While she is making her own trends, she is inspired by Jennifer Lopez, Jackie O, Bianca Jager and Edie Sedgewick.

"I appreciate so many looks and dressed based on how I am feeling that day. I like to say I dress my character. To me, that is so important. If your look says ‘I don’t care,’ then why should I hire you? What are you trying to tell the world?"

While she is doing so many things outside of the music industry, Melody emphasized that music is still her top priority. When asked what is next for her, she simply said:

Music, music, music. I want what I want people! I won’t stop until I get it!"

"Sweet Vendetta" is available on iTunes, Spotify, AmazonMP3, Deezer, 7DigitalRhapsody, Napster and Zune. Follow Melody on Twitter: @MelodyThornton.
