Graduation Attire: Is simple In?

Thursday, 10 May 2012 15:06 Written by  Ciara Vesey

As graduation season looms near, fashion usually takes a front seat. There are several styles and fashions this spring/summer to check out for that special day, including color blocking and the comeback of the shirtdress. Clean lines with splashes of color are definitely in, and can be played up or down with the right accessories. Your decision to go “simple” or go all out is a personal one, however, here are a few considerations you should keep in mind:

Venue and Weather

What we do know is that whether the ceremony is indoors or outdoors, you will have to wear some type of graduation robe. Now, if your ceremony is indoors, you may want to be sure you wear something that is comfortable and loose fitting. Many ceremonies are held in arenas/large auditoriums and it can get rather stuffy when they are full of excited people! If your ceremony will be outdoors, still wear something comfortable, but ladies you may want an outfit that is more fitting just in case it is extra windy that day. Also, if it is going to be very warm and sunny, lighter colors will help take some of the edge off from wearing those unsightly ceremony gowns.

Significance of the Occasion

I am graduating from law school in May and I want my look to reflect how monumental of an occasion it truly is for my family and I. However, for you it may be your second graduation ceremony or perhaps you’re just attending. Whatever the case may be, you should essentially “dress the part.” For example, if you’re the first person in your family to obtain a post-secondary degree, dressing simple may be the farthest thing you want to do. You should highlight your achievement in your appearance by wearing bright and whimsical colors. If you are perhaps just attending the ceremony, simple and comfortable is the way to go. A nice summer dress or linen outfit is clean and does not draw attention away from the event or the graduate.

Comfort and Safety

Graduation day is probably not the day to break out those five-inch stilettos you haven’t worn since your best friend’s wedding. The last thing you want to do is take a tumble across the stage, let alone on a 100-inch screen! Wedges and platforms are very much in this year and they offer a safe and stylish alternative to a skinny heel. Ultimately, it’s best to wear sensible shoes to prevent breaking your ankle or suffering an embarrassing moment.
