When you enter any competition, the goal is to win. You know, take the number one spot, win the trophy or whatever item that symbolizes your victory. Well, Florida native Syesha Mercado had a way of thinking that differs from the masses when it came to her involvement in the seventh season of American Idol. The goal was never to win it all, it was to be second, runner-up and if you look at that particular experience through her eyes, she definitely won.

“Winning is different for everybody,” she admits. “For me, what I wanted out of the competition was exposure, to gain more knowledge of the industry and to have another project under my belt.”

While some people may believe her methodology is a tad bit unorthodox, when she explains it, her logic becomes clearer, especially if you consider the fact that Mercado was no stranger to the entertainment business prior to her American Idol appearance. By the time she reached the American Idol stage, she had already done another reality show, some commercials and participated in a number of different competitions.

Having laryngitis during her experience didn’t make getting to the end an easy task for Mercado, but she pushed through a competition that she admits served its purpose for what she wanted to do in her life.

“It was a roller coaster for me,” she says. “But I also learned a lot from that experience.”

Growing up, Mercado says always knew exactly what she wanted to do with her life. At a young age, she was involved in various extracurricular activities and entered different talent shows and competitions in an effort to pursue her passion to entertain. Her passion doesn’t only include singing, but als o theater, acting, singing and dancing.

Many years later, she has the opportunity to do all of the above. While she had the chance to both sing and dance on American Idol, shortly after, she had the chance to be a part if the cast of the Dreamgirls revival. She didn’t have just any role—she played the role of Deena Jones.

While theater and the Dreamgirls tour demanded much from Mercado both physically and mentally, the filming of “Dreams,” which is now in post-production, was a refreshing change of pace for her, she admits.

And then there’s, the singer, who is putting the final touches on her debut album. What can we expect? A unique, urban sound mixed with pop, which can be attributed to her experience on American Idol because it was after that experience that she learned what type of style she wanted and it allowed her to grow.

“It took me a long time to come to this place,” admits Mercado. “I feel so comfortable with what I’m saying and how I look.”

As expected, getting her music out there for the fans has been a long process, but she says that it’s one of her main goals at the mom ent.

“They have been waiting for a very, very long time,” she comments.

In the near future, and soon after the release of her album, Mercado’s plan is to go on tour. After all, music is her first passion. So, it’s about time the world gets to hear her from that perspective.
