In Theater 47’s sophomore project, John Ruffin will introduce The Color Purple to Chicago’s Bronzeville community July 27-29 at the Harold Washington Cultural Center. With over 13,000 in attendance of John’s production of Dreamgirls, the playwright anticipates support for his second production. The Chicago native says his adaptation incorporates more acting than singing, with slight variations in the scenes and choreography from the original that adds more of a Broadway-style to it.
“I want to promote popular productions in our urban community that will pop,” John comments. “This play is about love, relationships, not having confidence and meeting people who bring that confidence out of you. We [Theater 47] can do something complex, different and offer diversity. We’re passionate about our work and love what we do.”
