Ten Years Since Y2K

Ten years ago, a great majority of people thought the world was going to end — or something like it. Others, like Mike, a student in Chicago, were aware of it but didn’t believe it would happen.

y“I was 10 years old. I think I was at a New Year’s Eve party with my parents,” he said. His mother was working in IT and she had to do a lot of the installation of the software so she talked about it, but their family didn’t get prepared.

People all over the world were stocking up on canned goods, plenty of water and made the proper living arrangements just in case the worst happened.

Yet, to their disappointment, nothing did. Ten years later, many people are under the same impression, that in the year 2012, the world will end indefinitely.

In 1999, a problem with major computer software became widespread, and on Jan. 1, 2000, the problem was supposed to get out of hand and cause major crashes in computer systems across the world, power outages and major means of communication were going to be unavailable.

But, on Jan 1, 2000, nothing happened and everything went on normally. Now, for the past two years, there has been a lot of media attention and widespread opinions and theories about the world ending in the year 2012. There is currently a movie out which serves as a depiction of what most believe is going to happen in the year 2012. The movie stars major players like John Cusack and Danny Glover, among others. According to the movie’s website synopsis of the film, “2012 is an epic adventure about a global cataclysm that brings an end to the world and tells the heroic struggle of its survivors.”

The contrast between the year 2000 suspected catastrophe and the year 2012 ending are similar yet very different in theory. The 2012 theory is based off of a variety of things ranging from religion to prophecies, but the most common theory is based off the Mayan Calendar. According to 2012endofdays.org, “Since this is due to take place on the winter solstice, this should provide clear evidence that the proper end day of that Mayan Calendar is December 21, 2012.”

However, others think that the day will be the Dec. 22 or 23. Winter solstice simply refers to winter officially beginning in the Northern Hemisphere and summer beginning in the Southern Hemisphere. Others don’t believe that the world is going to end, but instead they believe that in 2012, the world will go through a period of rebirth and reconstruction.

Like Y2K, no one will know exactly what happens in the year 2012 until it gets here, and hopefully it will not be the end of the world as we know it.
