How to Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In the month of October, the nation recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For American women, the fight is much tougher. Did you know that African American women are more likely to get breast cancer at a younger age than any other race? Did you know that African American women are more likely to die of breast cancer than other races? In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I’m going to share how you can avoid the risk of having breast cancer and show your support for others.

Go to your doctor and get a check-up or do a self-check exam. Make an appointment with your doctor or go to a free clinic and get a Pap test or a breast examination. If you want to do a self-check examination stand in front of a mirror or lay on a flat surface and examine your breast. If you see any problems like discoloration, redness, or swelling or when you’re laying down you feel a lump anywhere, go to your local hospital or call up your doctor to seek further information and help.

Do a walk, run, or Bike-A-Thon for breast cancer. Check in your city to see if there are any events that support breast cancer awareness. In St. Louis, Missouri, “Sista Strut Walk,” is a 3k Walk-A-Thon supports raising awareness about the fight for breast cancer in the African American community. For national organizations, you can go to the American Cancer Society, Prevent Cancer Foundation, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and many others to find out if they have any events that you can support. You can make up your own event, as well!

Wear pink for the month. Just that simple. Some women may not like to wear pink (I’m one of them) but it’s for a good cause, and it shows your support of the people who have suffered from breast cancer or who are currently suffering from it. You don’t even have to wear a lot of pink, just a simple pink bracelet, pink socks, pink ring or earring--- anything!

Turn your Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and any other social media network pink! Recently, Facebook users have asked people to turn their Facebook pages pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Just like the previous suggestion before it’s simple and it shows your support in the fight against breast cancer.

Donate to a foundation. You don’t even have to donate a lot just a simple $5 can make a difference. But don’t be fooled! Donate to a charity that actually gives your money to cancer research. You never know, the money you have could help find a cure.

Support the fight, find a cure!
