2011 & Beyond: Fall & Winter Fashion

When the leaves start falling and the weather starts to get a tad bit cooler, then you know it’s that time again. The holiday season starts up, bringing in the warmth we need to escape the chilly weather. With football season, Halloween and Thanksgiving all leading up to Hanukkah Kwanzaa and Christmas, it’s definitely a time full of cheer.

Even though these events are huge each year, it’s my favorite time of the year for a different reason: fall and winter fashion. Personally, I love dressing up for the fall. It’s something about layering clothes and wearing warm colors that really makes me like this season more than the others. Fall fashion isn’t just about looking warm. It’s about mixing your regular wardrobe with a seasonal twist.

According to SheKnows.com, a fashion blog, fall fashion is all about textures. If you master that, you can look your best this fall.

“I’ve really been into the dark wine/red color this fall, so I know that’s going to be something I’ll be wearing this season,” said Danii Pierre-Louis, 20, music business major at Columbia College Chicago.

That dark red, or burgundy, is one of many hot colors for the fall. Colors like coffee, teal and olive are perfect colors to wear this season. Transitioning from those summer brights to these dark fall/winter favorites will get you ready for the season.

The fall and winter season is all about layering. With the temperature dropping, you need to stay as warm as possible. Being from Chicago, I know how cold it gets firsthand, and that means layering with sweaters, scarfs and cardigans!

“I love cardigans. They complete any outfit. I know this winter I’m going to be layering everything I wear with cardigans,” said Mequilla Powell, 19, broadcast journalism major at Columbia College Chicago.

Cardigans can be a girl’s best friend. You can pair it up with skinny jeans and a regular t-shirt, or add a scarf for an edgy look. A long belted cardigan thrown over a pair of leggings or even dark skinny jeans will always give you that edgy look as well (Sheknows.com).

It’s safe to say that the top looks this fall/winter season are all about looking comfy, but still maintaining style. Knit hats, cashmere sweaters, peacoats and knee-high boots, are all favorites for this season.

“I will be wearing a lot of oversized sweaters, and knee-high boots this season. To me, it’s all about being comfy, but still looking cute,” said Lauren Lige, 19, fashion business major at Columbia College.

Nobody knows how cold it’s going to get this season, but we might as well look stylish while we find out. It’s all about figuring out what works well for your body type. Wear warm colors, layer on your clothes and add plenty of accessories. If you follow these symbol rules, you have a chance to master fall and winter fashion.
