This year’s spokesmodel for the Chicago Independent Awards was model/actress Opheia. Performers at the awards ceremony included Inspirational Artist of the Year award recipient Blaze On, Female Performer of the Year nominee Demi Lobo and artist Keithen Banks.
Chicago’s urban alternative artist Nikki Lynette (pictured right) won the Female Performer of the Year and Alternative Rock Artist of the Year awards. With the recent release of her latest mixtape Roses N’ Guns, Lynette says she’s excited about her recent success and that Chicago has an independent scene in music, whose recognition spans nationally and internationally.
“Chicago rocks and it feels good to get recognition from my own city,” comments Lynette. “I got a bigger response than I thought about my mixtape, and it just shows you doing music independently is the right way to go.”
Model Teslyn Butler was awarded the honor of Model of the Year, who says she represents real women and women who are average, sizes 14 and above.
Other award recipients from the evening included A & O as Promoter of the Year, John Blu for R & B Artist of the Year, Ms. Bling as Internet Radio Personality of the Year, Fakeshoredrive.com for Favorite Site of the Year, Go Getta for Most Slept on Female Artist, Urban Grind TV for the Street Media Award and others.
During the ceremony, Chelle Lee of Chelle Lee Designs presented a fashion show of her line. Her designs are inspired by her admiration for fashion and her individual style. The 30-year-old Rockford, Ill. native says she launched her line in March, which features classic pieces for any woman’s wardrobe.
“I love fashion and wanted to do something to help women feel good about themselves and look good,” comments Lee.
